Copar reduces the number of infractions by more than 80% with the use of telemetry

After implementing telemetry, Copar had the right data to change the fleet's reality and increase operational safety.

Copar reduces infractions by more than 80% with telemetry | Golfleet

“There is no fleet management without telemetry”. Who says this is the Copar Group's fleet coordinator, Fabiano Castro Ribeiro, who has been achieving great results in his management through technology.

And we, from Golfleet, of course we agree. We have positive feedback from those who give telemetry a chance, and the company was no different: the number of traffic violations plummeted from 5 to 6 thousand to just 800. For more details about this success story, continue reading.

Transformation through telemetry

The Copar Group, with more than 35 years of operation throughout Brazil, is responsible for the major brands DCCO, DCCO Rental, Noroeste Máquinas and Volga Engenharia. Over time, the need to promote a safe driving culture started knocking on the door.

These changes began to take place in the fleet, which has 200 vehicles, from November 2023, when a series of processes began to be implemented.

What were the main triggers that drove the changes? The number of infractions and two rollover accidents, which fortunately did not result in fatalities, but opened the company's eyes.

“We don’t want anyone to become a statistic in the company. To date, we have not had a fatal accident. We work in rural areas, in several states across the country, such as Amazonas, Tocantins, among others. We want to look after everyone”, explains Ribeiro.

Priority to safety and education

The fleet coordinator says that educational material was prepared and presented to everyone involved, pointing out the reasons that led to the project and the objectives that could be achieved.

This only highlights the importance of teamwork and awareness so that changes with the fleet safety program materialize at an organizational level, with all employees engaged and aligned with the new guidelines.

To do so, they used Frank Bird's Pyramid, a graphic representation that shows that incidents and deviations are much more frequent in a fleet and therefore should receive greater attention.

The events that occurred in the first half of 2023 in the Copar fleet were detailed, confirming the thesis defended by the theory, demonstrating the importance of analyzing each incident and deviation that occurred to identify behavior patterns and failures in the safety system.

Benefits of the implemented changes

In addition to analyzing the events, the gains that would be obtained with the implementation of the telemetry system were presented, such as fuel reduction, traffic violations, maintenance and costs. The actions were very well based, including pointing out what the consequences would be.

“We show that no one's life has a price and that our greatest asset is not the material, but the collaborator”, he points out, adding that only after the publicity and education phase, did they start to demand and apply the expected consequences.

From there to here, reduced the number of infractions by more than 80%. “We had between 5 and 6 thousand infractions and today we have an average of 800. The evolution has been fantastic”, celebrates the fleet coordinator.

Results with telemetry

All vehicles in the Copar fleet have the Golfleet Telemetry. “No vehicle runs without monitoring. It’s a standard that we take seriously”, observes Ribeiro, which admits that it would not be possible to achieve these results without technology.

“The basic principle is telemetry. The telemetry information is what allows me to arrive at these results. Today we have a series of information that we didn't have before. The range of options is very large and we are always improving. This is not a cost, but a benefit”, he comments with satisfaction.

Now, with this data in hand, the company continues to evolve, taking advantage of telemetry to improve operational efficiency, team safety and fleet maintenance.

Safety and accident prevention

Copar Group's success story highlights employee safety as one of the main benefits of telemetry. After all, technology allows you to monitor drivers' behavior in real time, identifying traffic violations and risky behaviors even before they result in accidents.

Therefore, prevention is key, and the use of telemetry allowed the company to implement personalized training programs and educational campaigns according to its reality, which results in a significant reduction in accidents and guarantees the physical integrity of drivers.

Reduction of operating costs

Telemetry generated a significant reduction in operational costs for the Copar Group, as the technology provides accurate data on fuel consumption, vehicle use and need for maintenance.

With this information, any company can optimize routes, carry out supply control, reduce vehicle downtime and control preventive maintenance, avoiding expensive and unexpected repairs or even greater damage.

Increased efficiency and productivity

Another highlight of telemetry is the improvement in efficiency and fleet productivity from Copar, by providing detailed data on the performance of vehicles and drivers.

As a result, It is possible to make informed decisions, allocate resources effectively and identify areas for improvement. Data-based management allows for an agile response to challenges and the implementation of strategies to increase operational efficiency.

Operation monitoring

Monitoring the operation as it happens proved to be an essential tool for the company, making it possible to stay up to date with the location of vehicles and the driving profile of drivers.

This facilitates rapid intervention in cases of emergency, route deviations or mechanical problems, which promotes increasingly safe and efficient operation.

Sustainability and social responsibility

Investing in telemetry also contributes to sustainability and social responsability of an organization, with direct environmental benefits, such as optimizing fuel use and reduction of CO2 emissions.

Furthermore, by promoting a culture of safety and responsibility among drivers, Copar Group strengthens its image and demonstrates its commitment to the safety and well-being of employees and the community.

Golfleet's role in reducing infractions

One of the most notable impacts with the implementation of telemetry at Copar was, without a shadow of a doubt, the significant reduction in the number of infractions. For an operation that registered between 5 and 6 thousand infractions, and now maintains an average of 800, the positive return on investment is evident.

With Golfleet, you can go further and investigate the origins of infractions. Speed in the identification and auditing processes makes all the difference, and the infractions module of the telemetry system provides advanced indicators, allowing quick and intuitive access to data:

Behavior based ranking

By noticing that the same drivers frequently appear at the top of the list, the manager can highlight these exemplary behaviors in team meetings and publicly recognize their performance, in addition to considering a bonus.

As the ranking classifies professionals according to their driving behavior, this promotes healthy competition between the team, resulting in professionals being more aware of their actions.

Cross-data analysis

Golfleet's telemetry system combines different data to identify patterns and behaviors. This analysis, in turn, allows you to understand the relationships between infractions and variables such as driving time, distance traveled and average speed.

If the manager notices that the majority of violations occur on specific routes during peak hours, for example, it is possible to adjust the drivers' departure times and routes, avoiding congestion and stressful situations.

Identification of those mainly responsible for the infractions

After identifying the drivers who commit the most traffic violations, the manager can organize specific training sessions for these individuals, focusing on more targeted defensive driving and awareness techniques, as well as implementing corrective actions and monitoring these professionals more closely.

Number of infractions per kilometer traveled

Analysis of this indicator is a valuable tool that allows a deeper understanding of driver behavior, as it reveals patterns of infractions and highlights who commits more infractions in a shorter distance covered.

This indicates a higher risk profile compared to those who may commit the same number of offenses but over a greater distance. This way, it is possible to identify and target specific training, with a special focus on these drivers and the prevention of new cases.

Viewing drivers by ranking

These are just a few suggestions, but drivers with a history free of traffic violations may be rewarded with some advantages such as bonuses or additional days off.

After all, the appreciation and recognition of exemplary drivers serves as an incentive for the entire team, promoting good driving practices and, consequently, reducing transgressions.

By integrating these functionalities, It is possible to correct bad behaviors and recognize good drivers at the same time, as the Copar Group itself did, in addition to reducing expenses with fines and repairs resulting from reckless driving practices and facilitating all work with the fines management.

Initiatives for the future of Copar

Copar's fleet management continues at full steam and is searching for new possibilities. Recently, they began promoting PROSA (Programa Sem Acidentes), which, more than encouraging safe driving practices, values those who respect traffic laws.

“We have to stop talking about the bad and focus on the good. At some point, the bad guy starts to feel ashamed. Therefore, the company is benefiting the best drivers. We have a driver who has driven 16 km without any speed events in 6 months”, he highlights.

The Copar Group's success story demonstrates how the use of telemetry, combined with management focused on safety and education, can transform fleet management, bringing significant results and ensuring the safety of employees. Certainly, new and surprising results are yet to come.

Investing in telemetry is, without a doubt, a strategic decision for any company that wants to improve its operation in general, and the example of Grupo Copar serves as an inspiration for those looking to achieve excellence in fleet management.
