What is the ideal technology for your light fleet management?

Among the main ones, telemetry and videotelemetry stand out. Indicated for different types of fleets, including smaller ones, they offer the manager the possibility of control, economy, tracking and security.

Operating as a telemetry company for more than a decade, we have heard countless questions, such as: “if my car is stolen, how can I accurately track it to find it?”, “how can telemetry help me?” , “which indicators should I evaluate to obtain better results?”. However, without a doubt, among all of them, the most recurrent is “what is the ideal technology for my fleet?”.

And anyone who thinks that questioning is common only to large companies and industries, which have larger and more diversified fleets, is wrong. Managers of smaller fleets are also faced with this question and are looking for the ideal technology to optimize their management.

Merchants and micro entrepreneurs, from different niches – from bakeries, stores in general, laundries… – ask themselves: after all, should I invest in telemetry or videotelemetry?

In fact, it is a key question that companies must ask in order to properly evaluate and decide on the ideal technology for their fleet. There are important differences between them and what will determine which is the most suitable is the purpose of use. Got confused? People explain.

Vehicle location technology

At the base of the pyramid, we have location technology, which points out the exact address where the vehicle is, that is, it is a tool that only indicates the position of the vehicle at the time of the query.

It is widely used by insurers, as it facilitates the recovery of the vehicle in case of theft. This technology is a viable option, even for companies that do not practice fleet management, but that need to protect their vehicles because they do not have insurance, for example.

It is recommended, in some cases, that together with the location technology, an additional prompt response service be contracted, so that the company has someone to turn to when it needs to find one or more vehicles.

Vehicle tracking and its many uses

Tracking, as its name suggests, is a technology that shows the fleet's trail, that is, it traces exactly where the cars are traveling, which even contributes to the cost reduction
This is because, with information from the odometer and ignition, the fleet manager can analyze, for example, the use and distance traveled by the car inside and outside the commercial period.

Excessive speeds practiced by drivers and other relevant information are given by the tracker, offering the manager an incredible possibility of controlling and organizing the fleet.
One sees not only the route taken by the driver, but the stopping points, the speed per km/h, the history and the actions per period, benefiting large, medium or small companies, regardless of the size of the fleet. The manager can monitor the productivity of the field team (which uses the fleet to carry out its routine activities).

As you can see, the tracking technology makes it possible to analyze the entire journey of the vehicle. Therefore, the tool is still an excellent safety measure, capable of contributing to a change in behavior in traffic and preserving lives.

O Golfleet Telemetry, for example, is one step beyond conventional tracking and provides very precise information, which, if well used, optimizes fleet management in a unique way.

Telemetry and its impact on fleet management

So far, we've focused on tracking. Now, shall we go ahead a little bit and get into telemetry? It is a slightly more complex tool, but it is also suitable for different fleet sizes.

Telemetry captures information from the vehicle and communicates it to a system, where the fleet manager can compile data and make important decisions. Here, it is worth clarifying: while location and tracking are focused on the vehicle, telemetry has driver behavior information as a differential, with a focus on taking care of the lives of people in traffic. That makes it clearer, right?

Among the telemetry indicators, the following stand out: driver behavior analysis; configurable fleet policies; indication of expenses with maintenance and fuel; lane speed management; management of fines, claims and consumption.

The reports generated by telemetry are extensive and precise, and the manager can analyze, in real time, the evolution of the main KPI's, whether by driver, vehicle or group. When integrated with fuel card systems, it performs all types of data crossing, identifying extra consumption, fraud and idleness.

With this, the fleet manager is able to change scenarios, achieve significant savings and implement a safe and productive environment, in accordance with his fleet policy.

Video telemetry technology: modernity and ease

Finally, at the tip of the pyramid, we have the most modern technology: video telemetry. Still little explored in Brazil, but well known and used in more developed countries, telemetry combined with a camera and artificial intelligence is ideal for companies that already carry out advanced fleet management.

It fulfills the functions of telemetry technology, but with some very interesting differentials. One of them is that a single piece of equipment does the function of both the tracker and the camera. As a result, video telemetry performs facial recognition of the driver, without the need for him to take any action, avoiding inconveniences such as the loss or exchange of identification cards, streamlining audits of infractions and vehicle use.

Now that you know the best technologies available on the market for fleet management, get to work! To choose the best option, it is important to evaluate the objectives and bottlenecks of your fleet management.
